Learn About New ADA Requirements, Risk Management and Bed Bugs
September 22, 2011 - Arizona Biltmore
Several changes to the Accessibility Guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) were recently issued, mandating numerous changes in requirements for properties by March 15, 2012. AzHLA has secured Kevin Maher, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs for the American Hotel & Lodging Association, for a one-time seminar that will walk our members through the new changes and what properties should be doing now in order to be prepared. After lunch, Tim Zehring, regarded as one of the foremost experts in Risk Management and premises liability, a 22-Year Veteran of the Mesa Police Department and Director of Risk Management for Sterling Grant and Associates will offer his professional expertise on what you can do to keep your property and your guests safe during their stay. Then, Ryan Gielow, a 28-year Commercial Pest Inspector with thousands of hours of experience in entomology, pesticide use, pest biology, and best practices from Arizona Exterminating Co. will present "Bed Bugs... They Can't Beat the Heat."
Iron Chef Leads The Drinkwater's Culinary Efforts
Chef Jose Garces, who won The Food Network's The Next Iron Chef last year, has joined the team at the new Drinkwater Hotel as executive chef. Garces heads Garces Restaurant Group, which owns eight successful eateries in Philadelphia and Chicago. In 2009, he was a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic, and he's also author of the cookbook Latin Evolution. At The Drinkwater - the new boutique hotel formerly known as Hotel Theodore- he'll head up food and beverage operations, including room and poolside food service, and three new concepts: Distrito (modern Mexican focusing on Mexican street food and slow-roasted barbacoa dishes, and a bar with 100 varieties of tequila), The Saloon (Old West-inspired artisanal cocktails and Southwestern cuisine), and Garces Trading Company (GTC) Coffee To-Go (custom-roasted coffee and baked goods). The hotel is set to open in November.

SummerScapes a Sizzling Success
VH&RA completed our annual summer marketing partnership with the Phoenix and Scottsdale CVBs, which marketed our member's summer values through a special section inserted in The Arizona Republic, as well as multiple California newspapers. This year's efforts increased exposure by also inserting the section into several newspapers in the Los Angeles and Bay Area markets. Nearly 250,000 California residents with household incomes of $100,000 or more received the insert. According to several members that participated in the special section, summer bookings have exceeded that of last year.
